Chicken is one of the healthiest and most common types of poultry, and its consumption goes back for thousands of years, and all around the globe. This is because of its flavor and flexibility, as there are many different ways of preparing, cooking, and eating it. However, there are many benefits that come from having a chicken-rich diet, too, which is another reason why its consumption is so widely popular. Some of these benefits include the high protein content, the vitamins and minerals they provide, the reduced cholesterol, and its anticancer properties.

It is not a secret that chicken is one of the richest sources of proteins we can have in our diet. Protein is one of the most important nutrients for the human body since they are one of the building blocks of body tissue. Besides, protein can also work as fuel, providing as much energy as carbohydrates. Chicken breasts, for example, consist of 31 grams of protein for every 100 grams. This is almost as much protein as is recommended by experts, which is 56 grams of protein for the average man (46 for an average woman).

Besides being rich in proteins, chicken is also very rich in vitamins and minerals that are essential to the human body, particularly Vitamins A, B, and D, as well as iron, calcium, and potassium. Vitamin A can help us improve and keep our eyesight, vitamin B can help us prevent cataracts and skin disorders, boost immunity, and enhance our nervous system. Vitamin D can help in absorbing potassium and strengthening our bones. Minerals like iron help us form hemoglobin and muscle activity, while also eliminating the risk of dementia.

Red meats like beef, pork, and lamb, come with high a high amount for saturated fat, which will only result in higher levels of “bad” cholesterol. On the other hand, chicken comes with less saturated fats, especially when we consume it moderately. As a matter of fact, the American Heart Association recommends consuming chicken or fish instead of red meats as this results in lower risks of cholesterol and the development of heart disease.

To top it off, many studies have shown that there is a relevant link between the consumption of red meat like pork and beef and the risk of developing colorectal cancer. The risk of developing this type of cancer later in life is reduced when we consume chicken or fish as part of our daily diets. Even when the evidence found is not conclusive yet, the benefits of chicken consumption are quite clear and relevant.
